Cooper made the 1985-86 and 86-87 jerseys and CCM made jerseys again in 1987-88.
Most numbers and nameplates were heat sealed material. The sleeve numbers were on the shoulders -- like football jerseys until 1988-89, when they were placed back on the arm.
The Penguins' crest was usually screened on a separate piece of material and sewn onto the front of the jersey. The 1987-88 jersey featured a fully embroidered crest for the first time in nine seasons.
The 1989-90 jersey featured the 41st NHL All-Star Game patch – the first commemorative patch on a Pittsburgh jersey.
The 1990 NHL All-Star Game was played in the Pittsburgh Civic Arena on January 21, 1990. Hometown captain, Mario Lemieux, scored four goals and was named the game's MVP.
The Penguins wore the patch on their left shoulders throughout the 1989-90 season and about 10 games into the 1991 season. A complaint from the Chicago Blackhawks (who hosted the 1991 All-Star Game) forced the Penguins to change to a new set of jerseys in 1991 without an All-Star patch.
