• The Penguins opened their 35th season at home, losing 3-1, to the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche.
• Rick Kehoe was named the team’s 20th head coach on October 15.
• Johan Hedberg recorded his first career shutout, making 29 saves in a 3-0 Penguins’ win in Ottawa on October 18.
• Alexei Kovalev recorded back-to-back hat tricks, November 13 at New Jersey and November 14 vs. the New York Islanders. The six goal outburst came immediately after Kovalev missed 13 games following knee surgery.
• Mario Lemieux led Canada to an Olympic Gold Medal.
• Kovalev earned his 500th career point December 11, against the Washington Capitals.
• Lemieux plays his 800th career game on January 12,  against the St. Louis Blues.
