June 13 - Obtained Randy Carlyle and George Ferguson from Toronto for Dave Burrows.

June 14 - Obtained Tom Bladon, Orest Kindrachuk and Ross Lonsberry from Philadelphia for a first round choice in the 1978 Amateur Draft.

September 6 - Obtained Rod Schutt from Montreal for a first round choice in the 1981 Amateur Draft.

February 6 - Obtained Gary McAdam from Buffalo for Dave Schultz.

• Montreal handed the Penguins a 12-0 loss on February 22 to set the franchise mark for the greatest margin of defeat.

• Penguins reeled off a seven-goal unbeaten streak (5-0-2) from March 13 through March 27.

• Penguins set a season record with 34 road points (13 wins, 8 ties).

• George Ferguson scored in overtime to eliminate Buffalo in the preliminary round of the playoffs, 2-1.
