To celebrate the rebirth of the team, Hornets’ owner John Harris wanted to have a unique jersey for the road. The result was a light blue wool jersey trimmed in gold with gold twill numbers.

The problem was obvious when the Hornets played their first televised road game against the Buffalo Bisons on October 15, 1961. The issue was how the blue color translated on black-and- white television. Home teams wore darker colors in those days and, unfortunately, the blue jerseys looked like dark jerseys too. See rare video footage in clip below. Rare televison coverage was too confusing for viewers who couldn’t see any contrast between the teams on the tube. The jerseys featured tie-down collars. A full circular crest trimmed in gold. The Hornets wore these for road games through the end of 1962-63 season.

The shorts of the the uniform still featured vertical striping and the letter “P” on the each leg. The socks feature the same stripe pattern from the sleeves.
